Proper drainage is equally essential because standing water or excessive moisture can accelerate the degradation process, regardless of whether the wood is treated or untreated. Ensuring that water drains away from wooden structures will minimize moisture retention in the wood, further extending its lifespan.

Choosing untreated wood or keeping raw wood in humid conditions would actually increase the risk of rot, as untreated wood lacks the protective chemicals necessary to withstand such conditions.
